Pokemon Crystal battery replaced
Brock and Crystal
After hearing about the recently announced Pokemon Gold and Silver remakes (so excited!) I decided to relive my memories of the Johto region with my old Crystal cart. As I expected, the battery was dead, and gone with it was my ability to save. The batteries in the Gold, Silver and Crystal carts tend to die out faster than the Red, Blue, Green and Yellow carts because they have an internal clock which keeps draining the battery even when you aren't playing.

My tools: 3.8mm gamebit, a thin knife, a CR2032 battery, and some electrical tape. Removing the old battery is a cinch if you've got a soldering iron, but sadly I do not and had to slowly work it off the tabs with a knife. If you do this, be careful and always have the knife pointed away from your body and hands, or else you might cut yourself. So, was the replacement a success? I turned on the game and saved in the first room, and checked it a few hours later...

My Room
Success! My save file is sitting pretty, and the internal clock is keeping time just fine. Checked the cart on my Game Boy Player and used my Gamebridge to take those screens. I need to use it more often. So yeah, hooray! Granted I won't be playing Crystal that much right now, since I'm more focused on my Platinum game, but it's nice to know that it'll be working fine for the next few years or so.

Gameboy Color
I even have my Game Boy Color from back then. Tidal wave of nostalgia right here. I used to play this thing hours on end. It still works too. What about the Pokemon figures in this post? You'll get to see more of them later. =P

So to anyone out there with dead batteries in their Pokemon carts, check out these pages for a more detailed look on how to replace them.

Tutorial for Red/Blue/Green/Yellow/Silver/Gold/Crystal

Tutorial for Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

You don't have to follow these tutorials exactly (see how I used a gamebit instead of pliers, and a knife instead of a soldering iron) but they offer lots of info and images to guide you through the process. Good luck and see ya later.
